Cigna Reports Decline in Earnings; Beats Expectations

Health insurer Cigna (NYSE:CI) reported third quarter earnings that fell by about a third.

Profits fell to $200 million, or $0.74 per share, compared to $307 million, or $1.13 per share, in last year's third quarter.

Adjusted earnings of $1.20 per share beat analyst expectations, as did a 7% increase in revenue, to $5.61 billion.

Cigna said earlier in the week it would acquire HealthSpring (NYSE:HS).

Rivals Aetna (NYSE:AET) and WellPoint (NYSE:WLP) both beat analyst expectations with their earnings reports this week.
